GARNER — Calvin C. Kraus, 71, of Garner, died Monday (April 30, 2007) at his home southwest of Garner. He fought a gallant fight against a very rare blood disease, Amyloidosis. His body has been donated to the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis, Minn. Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner with the Revs. Larry Laskie and David Graham officiating. A flag presentation will be conducted by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church. Memorials may be directed to Calvin C. Kraus Memorial Fund.

Calvin Charles Kraus, the son of Emil and Emma (Grell) Kraus, was born March 20, 1936, at Klemme. He graduated from Garner High School and Mason City Junior College. Cal served his country in the U.S. Army in the artillery division at Nike bases in the Chicago area. On Nov. 28, 1957, he married Sharon Louise Zech at Charles City. Following his honorable discharge, they moved to Rockford where Cal farmed with his father-in-law. In 1963, they moved to Garner where Cal worked at the Goodnature Store. Cal later was employed at Winnebago Industries in Forest City as director of purchasing for nearly 20 years. He also worked in the purchasing department at IMT and Stellar Industries in Garner before retiring in 2003. He owned and operated a car wash in Garner. Cal and Sharon enjoyed traveling to Hawaii every year for 23 years during the month of February. He also enjoyed traveling around the United States and would check out any museum located in that particular city. He loved the outdoors. Cal fished in many places in the U.S and Canada and loved camping with his family and friends in his Winnebago motorhome. He was a member of the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner where he served for a term on the consistory. He was a member of the Garner American Legion and had served on the Garner City Council.

Cal is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Sharon, of Garner; four children, Tom (Lisa) Kraus of Garner, Brian (Sherri) Kraus of LeMars, Jason (Janelle) Kraus of Nashua and Ellen (Brian) Schaeffer of Spokane, Wash.; six grandchildren, Andrea (Matt) Thompson, Jena Kraus, Jesse Kraus, Ben Kraus, Breanne Kraus and Kaitlyn Kraus; two precious great-grandchildren, Lillian Rose Thompson and Ryan Matthew Thompson; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Arlene Kramer. Cataldo Funeral Home.
