James H. Knudtson was born Feb. 1, 1915, the second child of Knudt B. and Clara (Haugen) Knudtson on the farm, Winnebago County, near Forest City. He was baptized and confirmed at Winnebago Lutheran Church, where he remained a life-time member. He attended the country school nearby, then attended and graduated from Waldorf Academy. He helped his father with farm work until being able to set up farming on his own. James enjoyed farming all his life. Along with working the fields James was very proud of his dairy herd. James often told how he lived on that farm for 53 years. Between working the fields and milking cows, son Gary was born in 1940.
On June 29, 1973, James and Ruth Tue of Klemme, Iowa, were united in marriage at the Methodist Church in Clear Lake. After 20 years of living on the farm together, they moved to a home in Lake Mills. In his free time, James enjoyed playing on area softball teams, going to fairs, singing with the barbershop chorus and dancing. Later in life, James and Ruth enjoyed traveling. A special place James wanted to go was to Norway, which they did in 1993. They wintered in Arizona, and then Texas. After retirement James took up golfing and going to grandkid’s sporting events. This summer James and Ruth celebrated 35 years of marriage.
James is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Lake Mills; his son, Gary Knudtson of Forsyth, Mo.; two stepsons, Greg (Nancy) Tue, of Clear Lake, and Mark (Margaret) Tue, of Garner; grandson, Greg (Nancy) Cornell of Watertown, S.D.; along with many stepgrandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers, Charles Knudtson, and Robert (Delores) Knudtson; a sister Edith Knutson; sisters-in-law, Cleone Knudtson and Evelyn Knudtson; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. James was preceded in death by his parents, Knudt and Clara; step-mother, Mabelle; brothers, Ernest Knudtson and his wife, Avis, Melburn Knudtson, and Victor Knudtson: sister, Florence Albaugh and her husband, John; sister-in-law Irene Knudtson; and brother-in-law Raymond Knutson.
