19 July 1830 -- 21 November 1918

Dorathea Lau was born in Pribbenow, Melkenburg Schwerin Germany, 19 July, 1830, and died in her home and Klemme, Iowa, November 21, 1918, thus bringing her age to 88 years and four months. 62 years ago she and her husband came to this country and settled on a farm in Clayton County, Iowa. There they lived, she and her husband both working hard, and economizing in every way possible to pay for a little home which they might call their own. Mother Lau often told of the hardships she and her family endured during the early pioneer days and how they were often in want of the necessities of life and home. Especially this was the case when her husband was drafted into the United States Army during the Civil War. Mother Lau was endowed with a strong constitution which enabled her to endure hardships and privations and kept her hopeful that a better day was coming. In the year 1854 she was united in marriage to Christian Lau. To this happy union 11 children were born, four of which have passed into the Great Beyond waiting to bid the mother welcome after coming. The 30th of August, 1894 her husband was taken from her through the Angel of Death. She united with the Methodist Episcopal Church shortly after coming to this country and remained a faithful member of the same until death. The past few years she was not able to attend church services on account of her feeble condition. She was always glad when her pastor called on her to have God's word read to her and offer prayer. Often she gave testimonial of her faith in God and that she knew she was child of God. Often she invited us to her house to hold our prayer service in her presence. Death did not find her unprepared, she was ready to meet her God who had been most precious to her during these long 88 years. She leaves to mourn her death five sons, two daughters, 58 grandchildren, and 52 great-grandchildren.
