MEGAN CHRISTINE McDERMOTT, 20, of Corwith, Iowa, a pharmacy technician and third-year pharmacy student, died Feb. 14 at Iowa Methodist Hospital, Des Moines, Iowa, of injuries from a Feb. 8 automobile accident in Des Moines. Born in Belmond, Iowa, a daughter of James and Deanna (Ahrens) McDermott, both of Corwith, Iowa, she was raised and received most of her early education in Clear Lake, Iowa.

She was a 2000 graduate of Clear Lake High School, where she was an All-State and All-Academic first team in softball, an Army Student Athlete, a member of the track team, a State of Iowa scholar and a member of the National Honor Society. She was also an Army Student Athlete and a State of Iowa scholar. She also was a five-time district champion on the swim team in Clear Lake. Miss McDermott was a third-year pharmacy student at Drake University, in Des Moines, where she was a Drake Presidential Scholar, a member of Phi Delta Chi National Pharmacy Fraternity and a Drake Merit Scholar. She also had been working as a pharmacy technician. She had worked for CVS Pharmacies, in East Providence, from June to August 2002, and more recently for Hy-Vee Stores, in Des Moines.
While living in Clear Lake, she had been a lifeguard at Clear Lake and Opportunity Village.

Besides her parents, she leaves a brother, James McDermott III of Corwith; her maternal grandmother, Martha Ahrens of Manchester, Iowa; her paternal grandfather and stepgrandmother, James and Mary McDermott of Smithfield and Warwick; her paternal great-grandmother, Eva Marie McNeil of Providence; several aunts and uncles; and many cousins.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Philip Church, Putnam Avenue, Smithfield.
