Sidney Emery Root
July 29, 1862 --- February 12, 1920

Sidney E. Root, a former resident here and of Eagle Grove was buried here last Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Root and daughter, Catharine, accompanied the remains here. He died at his home at Carlisle at noon Friday, Feb. 12th, aged 57 years, six months and fourteen days.

He was born at Minneiska, Minn., July 29th, 1862, the eldest son of Wm. Root. A younger sister, Mrs. John Wigans, of Walnut Grove, Minn., with her husband and several children survive him, also a brother, Guy Root of South Dakota.

Sidney Root united with the Baptist church at Mankato, Minn., in the winter of 1885, was married to Miss Lillie McKay of Mankato, Minnesota July 1st, 1886. Four children were born to this union, the eldest, Mrs. Ruth Collins and husband, and two children and Miss Catharine Root of Carlisle, survive him. Two boys between these two passed beyond and are buried in the cemetery, Mr. Root being buried beside them at his request. Relatives and many friends are left to mourn his passing.

Funeral services were held at Carlisle, the Baptist minister officiating. A large number attending. The floral gifts were beautiful and Mr. Root was of a cheerful disposition, and looked on the bright side, was very helpful to others and suffered his long illness with cheerfulness. He has been sick for four years and was confined to his bed since last October. He was willing to die and said, “Its all right”. Owing to the storm here and bad roads, delayed trains, many were prevented from coming who intended doing so. The friends at Goldfield and at Carlisle were helpful in all ways, which is thankfully appreciated by the many friends of Mr. Root. “Adversity shows us who our friends are”;. –Goldfield.

Sidney Emery Root was born in Minneapolis [Minneiska], Minnesota, July 29th 1862 and died at Carlisle, Iowa, February 12th 1920, aged 57 years 6 months and 14 days. He united with the Baptist church in the winter of 1885 at Mankato, Minnesota. Was married to Miss Lillie McKay on July 1st 1886 at Mankato. To this union were born four children, two sons and two daughters. The daughters, Mrs. Ruth Collins and Miss Catharine Root survive him. The two sons preceded him in death some years ago, one dying at Eagle Grove at the age of nine months and the other at Des Moines at the age of eleven years. One sister-in-law, two grandchildren, one sister and one brother with their families besides a host of other relatives and friends are left to mourn his death.

He had a long illness of much suffering from paralysis but he bore it bravely always being cheerful and inclined to look on the bright side of life and he was always helpful to others.

Funeral services were held at the Baptist church at Carlisle on Friday, February 13th at 2:30 conducted by Rev. R. C. Ross, his pastor. The body was brought to Goldfield for burial on Saturday, February 14th. After a short service at the grave the body was laid to rest by the side of his two sons in the family lot in Glenwood cemetery. Services here were in charge of Rev. J. S. Nicholson.

Sydney Root, a former resident of Goldfield, died Thursday Feb. 12th at his home at Carlisle, Iowa, from pernicious anemia. The remains were brought here for burial Saturday and he was laid to rest beside his two little sons. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Collins and Miss Catharine. Mr. Root was a brother-in-law of Mrs. Cora Thompson.
