Lillie Bethiah McKay Root
September 9, 1861 --- July 13, 1936

Mrs. Lillie B. Root, daughter of William and Ruth McKay, was born at Mankato, Minn., Sept. 9, 1861. She grew to young womanhood at Mankato, and was married July 1, 1886, to Sidney Root. About two years after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Root moved to Denmark, Iowa, and later moved to Goldfield where they resided for a number of years. They then moved to Des Moines where they resided about 10 years and then came to Carlisle in 1913, where she had since resided.

Four children were born into this home. One son died in infancy and another son died when about 11 years of age during their residence at Goldfield. Mr. Root passed away at their home in Carlisle, Feb. 12, 1920. Two daughters survive their mother, Mrs. Ruth Collins of Ft. Des Moines and Mrs. Catharine Lewis of Carlisle. There are also 11 grandchildren. Mrs. Root was the last member of her immediate family.

She united with the Baptist church when a girl, and she had remained a faithful worker for her
church wherever she had lived. On coming to Carlisle, she transferred her membership from the
Calvary Baptist church at Des Moines to the Carlisle Baptist church, where she had served in
various departments of the church and where for several years, she was janitor. She was always
ready to aid those who were ill, or in sorrow, going into many homes in this community on that
mission. She was also a member of the W. C. T. U. of Carlisle.

For the past few years, she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Lewis, in Carlisle where she had been in failing health for several months. Her last illness, however, was of only a few days duration, due to the extreme heat and she peacefully passed to her reward Monday, July 13,
1936. She was 74 years, 10 months and 22 days of age.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 15, at 11 o’clock at the Carlisle Baptist church, conducted by the Rev. Frank Case, pastor of the Galilee Baptist church, Des Moines. The body was taken to Goldfield for interment.
