John (Tom) Tate, 74, Marshalltown, formerly of Webster City, died Thursday, March 14, 2002 at the Iowa Veteran's Home in Marshalltown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Rev. John Flaherty, celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday with a Rosary at 6:45 p.m. and a Scripture Service at 7 p.m.

John Thomas Tate, son of John and Luella Brown Tate, was born August 29, 1927 at Chicago, Ill. He received his education in the Hadley, Minn., Blairsburg and Webster City schools. During WW II, he served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre. On August 11, 1951 he married Deloris Colleen Andrew at St. Thomas in Webster City. The couple resided in Iowa. He was job superintendent for various companies. He had worked at Zitteral Mills Construction and Nissen's at Webster City, Mueller Construction at Marshalltown, Land-O-Lakes at Fort Dodge. In 1981, he moved to San Luis Obispo, Calif. and later to Arroyo Grande, Calif., where he worked for J.W. Design, and Construction and Bunnell Construction. He assisted in the construction of various schools, hospitals, nursing homes and shopping centers in Iowa and California. This includes several structures at Iowa State University. He was also nominated for the Master Builder's Award for his work on the Mayflower Home in Grinnell. He was a very accomplished finish carpenter and is well remembered as always being available to help a friend or relative with carpentry projects.

Mr. Tate is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Patrick and Debra Tate, Michael Tate, all of Webster City; Raymond and Monica Tate of Franklinton, N.C.; David Tate of Des Moines, former wife, Deloris Tate, Webster City, grandchildren Ryan and Sarah Tate, Tenille and Greg Rogers, Darci and Chad Tate; Tara and Chad Leeper; Michael and Jordan Tate; Anna Gabriel Tate; great-grandchildren, Kylie Tate, Bradley Jordan and Reid Leeper; Kennedi Rogers, sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Charles Hemmitt of Middeburg, Fla., Marcella and Virgil Mourlam of Woolstock; Patti and Tom Chelesvig of Webster City; brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Mary Lou Tate of Agency, Dan and Jennie Tate of Sommerset, Wis., several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, John Hunter and nephew Terry Hunter.

Tom was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas and enjoyed golfing, carpentry and spending time with friends and family.
