Robert Charles “Bob” Doherty
June 16, 1927 --- December 31, 1996

Robert C. "Bob" Doherty, 69, a retired rural mail carrier, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 1996, at his home.

Mr. Doherty was born June 16, 1927, in Rock Valley, Iowa. The family moved to rural Inwood, Iowa, where he grew up and received his education. He entered the Army, where he served during World War II in the South Pacific and the occupation of Japan.

He married Alice Anderson on June 14, 1951, in Dell Rapids. He attended the Reisch American School of Auctioneering in Mason City, Iowa, in 1964. He started a career as a rural mail carrier in 1973, [which included being in Eagle Grove in 1987], and retired in 1994. He also farmed from 1951 until the time of his death.

He was a member of the Church of St. Mary in Larchwood, Iowa, and a member of the Canton Post No. 3164, VFW of Canton.

In addition to his wife, survivors include seven sons: Pat of Dousman, Wis.; Matt, Bob Jr., and John, all of Larchwood, Iowa; Bill of Inwood, Iowa; Francis of Benson, Minn.; and Marty of Sioux Falls; and six daughters: Maureen Reckert of Larchwood, Iowa; Cindy Grotjohn and Mary Jackson, both of Inwood; Patricia Metzger of Bloomfield, Iowa; Theresa Sehr of Sioux Falls; and Ann Spaans of Humboldt, Iowa; 24 grandchildren; three sisters: Rose Kippley of Alvord, Iowa; Monica Carmon of Sioux Falls; and Mary Ann Wasik of Utica, Mich.; and one brother, Gerald of Sioux Falls.

Services begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Church of St. Mary in Larchwood, with burial in the Larchwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 9 p.m. at the church, with the family present from 4 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 8:30 p.m. A parish prayer service will begin 7:30 p.m. Friday during visitation. The Roste Funeral Home in Larchwood is in charge of the arrangements.
