Orville William Thompson
29 November 1909 --- 26 September 1997

Orville William Thompson, son of Frank and Sylvia Clough Thompson, was born November 29, 1909, near Altoona, Iowa. He was educated in a country school and farmed for a number of years. He was united in marriage to Evelyn Nielsen of Eagle Grove, on November 27, 1928, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home near Indianola until he entered the United States Marine Corps in December of 1943. He served with the 6th Marine Division in China, and was present at the surrender ceremonies of the Japanese Army. During his term in the service, his wife and two children lived in Eagle Grove. He was discharged on December 12, 1945, at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Chicago, Ill., and returned to Des Moines where the family made their home.

He was united in marriage to Mary Duravig in 1948, and to Amanda Jewell Summer in 1971, both of whom were from the St. Louis area. He was employed by ACF Industries, St. Louis, Mo., until retiring in 1971, and moving back to Des Moines. He moved to Valley Junction Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in September of 1971 with his wife, Amanda, where she died a short time later.

Orville William Thompson died Friday, September 26, 1997, at the Valley Junction Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Des Moines at the age of 87. Survivors include a daughter, Helen Babcock, and husband, Leroy, of Eagle Grove; a son, William D. Thompson of St. Louis, Mo.; one brother, B. W. Thompson of Dallas, Ore.; two sisters, Kay Stone and husband, Bob, of Des Moines, and June Graig of Kansas City, Mo.; five grandchildren; and 12 greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Evelyn, Mary, and Amanda; three brothers, Ralph, Loren, and Norman; one sister, Lucille Borral, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 30, 1997, at 2 p.m. at the Willim Funeral Home in Eagle Grove with the Reverend H. W. Schiller officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Eagle Grove. Willim Funeral Home, Eagle Grove, was in charge of arrangements.
