Virginia M. Hiemstra - Funeral services were held on Saturday morning at the Church of the Nazarene in Clarion with Pastor H. Mark Else officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Clarion with arrangements by the Willim Funeral Home.
Kitty McCool was the organist and vocal selections were by Doug McGrath, Dallas and Marilyn Coon and Mark Hinton. Honorary bearers were: Dale Bubeck, Frank Studer, Kermit Rietema, Steve Marvets, Jr., Bill Davids, Ralph McGrath and Michael Hiemstra.
Casket bearers were: Todd Hiemstra, Brandon Graddick, Roger Southard, Dennis McGrath, Michael Studer and Dean Meinders.
Virginia Mae Hiemstra was born September 16, 1927 at Clarion and was the daughter of Homer and Ulla Suiter McGrath. She was raised in the area of her birth and graduated from Clarion High School in 1946.
On June 1, 1946 she and Herman H. Hiemstra were united in marriage in the Wright Christian Reformed Church of rural Kanawha. They lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan while Herman attended college. Their first three children were born in Grand Rapids. In 1953 they returned to Clarion where the other three children were born. They farmed until moving to town six years ago.
Hiemstra died at the Clarion Community Memorial Hospital on Wednesday morning, August 18 after suffering a heart attack at her home. She had attained the age of 65 years, 11 months and 2 days.
She is survived by her husband Herman; sons: David and wife Jean of Clarion, Dale and wife Colleen of Goldfield; daughters: Sheryl Graddick of Ames, Karen and husband Steve Marvets, Sr. of Eagle Grove, Paula and husband Dennis Harms of Belmond and Ellen Hiemstra of Clarion; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild and two brothers: Ben McGrath of Clarion and Howard McGrath of Escondido, California.
Her parents, an infant daughter and a sister, Della Southard preceded her in death.
Virginia was a faithful worker in the Clarion Church of the Nazarene. She was the Director of Children's Ministries and a Sunday School teacher. She was a past officer of the Clarion Christian Women and had been a 4-H Leader.
