Ellen J. Hiemstra, 36, died Friday, August 19 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines from injuries she suffered in an auto accident near Clarion on Thursday, August 18.
Funeral services were held from the Church of the Nazarene on Tuesday, August 23 with Rev. H. Mark Else officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery at Clarion. Willim Funeral Home of Clarion was in charge of the arrangements.
Casket bearers were Dennis Harms, Jeff Mericle, Todd Hiemstra, Brandon Graddick, Mike Woods and Carl Studer. Honorary casket bearers were Community Memorial Hospital staff and Dr. Robert F. McCool. Special reflections were by Rev. Carl Hiemstra, Vicki Asbe, Paula Else and Paula Harms.
Music was provided by Michelle Plummer, Mark Hinton and the Vacation Bible School children. Kitty McCool was organist.
Ellen was born July 7, 1958 at Belmond and was the daughter of Herman H. and Virginia M. McGrath Hiemstra. She was raised on the family farm and graduated from Clarion Community High School in 1976. She worked at the Woodward State Hospital and Clarion Care Center.
In 1988 she earned her nursing degree from Mid-America Nazarene College in Olathe, Kansas. She first worked at Shenandoah and in 1990 came to the Clarion Community Memorial Hospital where she was supervisor of the 11 am - 7 pm shift at the time of her death.
She was a faithful member of the Clarion Church of the Nazarene and had just helped with Vacation Bible School.
Those left to cherish her memory are her father, Herman of Clarion; three sisters: Sheryl Graddick of Ames, Karen Marvets of Eagle Grove and Paula Harms of Belmond; two brothers, David of Clarion and Dale of Goldfield; nine nieces and nephews and one great-nephew.
She was preceded in death by her mother on August 18, 1993; an infant sister and her grandparents, Homer and Ullo McGrath and Hubert and Inez Hiemstra.
