Leo Theodore Schoo
3 December 1937 ---- 13 November 2021Leo Theodore Schoo, the son of Joseph and Pauline (Sieve) Schoo, was born on December 3, 1937, in Ashton, Iowa. He was raised on the family farm and was educated at St. Joseph Catholic School in Ashton.
On January 22, 1959, Leo was united in marriage to Constance “Connie” Joy Pickering at Saint Andrews Catholic Church in Sibley. In 1960, they moved to Eagle Grove and raised their six children. Their marriage of 61 years was filled with love, laughter, good times, bad times, tears and joy with many memories too numerous to count.
A job at a furniture store brought Leo and Connie to Eagle Grove. He worked for Voss Floor Covering for many years and Eagle Grove Coop Lumber. Most of Leo’s working years were spent in floor covering. In 1983, Leo and Connie owned and operated Leo’s Interiors in Eagle Grove, until their retirement in 2003.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and served as an EMT for the Eagle Grove Ambulance.
The early years of raising a family brought a lot of fishing and camping during the summer months and many family gatherings at the 'Big White House' (as referred to by their grandchildren). The grandchildren spent many hours playing together, building bonfires in the backyard, gathering on the stairs for a picture with all the cousins and driving grandpa’s lawnmower with a wagon often seen filled with their younger cousins or leaves in the fall. Later in life the family gathered at Lake Shetek in Minnesota. They also moved to a smaller house, and this too was filled with many memories, especially with their youngest granddaughters, Claire, Ava and Lydia.
Leo had a sharp memory and was quick witted with a dry sense of humor. He was always ready to share a humorous one-liner comment (Leoism) with everyone he met. His quick wittedness has carried on with his children and grandchildren as they are often heard using his “Leoism’s”.
In his retirement years, Leo drove a bus for the Eagle Grove School Distract and was blessed with the opportunity to pick up his granddaughters, Claire and Ava. Every morning they would greet him with “Hi Grandpa” and at times would bring him a special treat that his daughter Karen had made. Within a short period of time all the kids on the bus were greeting Leo with a “Hi Grandpa”.
Leo passed away Saturday, November 13, 2021, at Iowa Specialty Hospital in Clarion surrounded by his family at the age of 83 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Connie on March 15, 2020; Joe and Pauline (Sieve) Schoo; grandson, Clark Gregory Schoo; sisters, Darlene (Clayton) Goddard and Marge (Al) Youngers; brother, Noel (Lavina) Schoo; brother-in-law, Charles Honkomp, Lawrence Johannes, Richard Wills and Gary Pickering and sister-in-law, Joanne Pickering.
