Lettie Susan Johnson Talmage
27 October 1895 --- 5 August 1987Lettie Susan Johnson was born October 27, 1895, at Eagle Grove, Iowa, the daughter of Lars and Sady Christensen Johnson.
She received her education in the Eagle Grove Public Schools. She was united in marriage to Hurl Dewitt Talmage of Wabash, Ind. in 1919 at Fort Dodge, Iowa. The young couple lived in the Champaign-Urbana, Ill. area for 12 years before returning to Eagle Grove where he owned and operated a jewelry store. Mr. Talmage died in 1950.
Lettie made her home in Eagle Grove with her brother, Arthur Johnson and a sister, Laura Johnson, until their deaths. She had been in Illinois with her daughter since April of this year, where she died suddenly on Aug. 5, 1987, at the age of 91 years, nine months, and eight days.
Lettie was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Past Worthy Matron of OES, Past Noble Grand of the Rebekahs, past president of the PTA, active in Girl Scouting. Lettie also cooked the traditional Norwegian dishes and did beautiful Hardanger work.
She is survived by her daughter Emma Laura Sawyer of Orland Park, Ill.; grandsons, Paul F. Sawyer and John D. Sawyer, and a granddaughter, Jessica (Mrs. Daniel) Lueck of Orland Park, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, Lewis, John, Arthur, and James, and sisters, Marie Nelson, and Laura Johnson.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 10, 1987, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove. Pastor Paul Schaedig officiated, and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
