Howard Lester Knutson

Howard L. Knutson, 74, Clear Lake, formerly of Thor and Eagle Grove, died July 28 at Mason City. Services were held at Zion Lutheran Church at Clear Lake with burial at Clear Lake Cemetery.

Howard L. Knutson was born near Thor, Iowa. His parents were Henry H. and Ingeborg Knutson. He attended local schools and graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1928. He later attended Eagle Grove Junior College and Iowa State University at Ames. He married Thelma Hovey in 1938 at Badger and worked for Production Credit Agency in Webster City and Humboldt from 1938 to 1942. He then farmed in the Badger area for four years. In 1949, they moved to Clear Lake where he was Assistant Manager for Mutual of New York Insurance Agency. He was an insurance agent with the company for 35 years, retiring in 1981 and was a member of the Field Club, an honor organization of Mutual of New York. He was past president of the Clear Lake School Board and a member of the Clear Lake Noon Lions Club. He was active with the Clear Lake All Veterans golf course and was instrumental in initiating raising funds to build Handicap Village in Clear Lake.

Surviving are his wife, Thelma, daughter, Mrs. Al (Susan) Berkvam of Northfield, Minn.; four grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Iva Nessa, Eagle Grove. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Thelma Gummerson and a brother, Everett Knutson.
