Betty Joan (Baker) Hine
April 15, 1921 ---- October 20, 2021

Betty Joan Hine passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at Ava’s House Hospice Care in Sioux Falls. Betty was 100.

Betty Joan Baker was born April 15, 1921 to Winfred and Vesta (Holman) Baker in Eagle Grove, Iowa. During her junior year of high school, she and her family moved to Sioux City, Iowa where was she graduated from Central High in 1939. Betty then attended business college and later worked in the offices of the Woodbury County courthouse.

On January 22, 1943, Betty was united in marriage to Robert E. Hine of Sioux City, Iowa. After Robert’s discharge from the Army Air Corp in World War II, the couple resided in Sioux City, Iowa where they worked for the family accounting business. In 1948, Bob and Betty transferred to the Sioux Falls office and Sioux Falls eventually became their permanent home.

Betty was a 71-year member of First Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed participating in church circle as well as teaching Sunday School and Bible School. She was also a member of Chapter BD, P.E.O., and Daughters of the Nile. In her spare time, Betty was a Girl Scout leader and enjoyed playing mahjong with friends. Throughout her life, faith, family and friends were truly her greatest passions.

She and Bob helped to supervise the After School Program, and the delivered Meals On Wheels. Golfing at the Minnehaha Country Club was one of their favorite summer pastimes, along with tending their backyard flowers. Throughout the years, they enjoyed caring for many cats.

Grateful for having shared her life are her two daughters, Susan Beck of Canistota, South Dakota and Marilyn Wagner of Durham, NC; two grandchildren, Anne (Lonnie) Albers of Sioux Falls and Samuel (Abbi) Bell of Boston, MA; and one great-grandson, Benjamin. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Robert E. Hine; her parents; two brothers, W. Ross Baker and John M. Baker; and two sons-in-law, Gerry Beck and Galen Wagner.

In lieu of flowers, Betty requested memorials be directed to First Presbyterian Church of Sioux Falls or the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 25, 2021, at First Presbyterian Church, 2300 S West Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD, with private burial at Woodlawn Cemetery.
