Smallest Baby Dies 24 Hours After Birth

Probably the smallest child on record born alive, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Hanson of Goldfield, died in Community Memorial hospital, Clarion, early Saturday about 24 hours after birth. The baby which was perfectly formed, was born four and one-half months prematurely. She was too small to weigh. The infant weighed an estimated 10 or 12 ounces. She was about 11 inches long. Hanson's daughter was placed in an air lock in the hospital immediately after birth. An Eagle Grove physician, Dr. Dale Harding was the attending doctor.

American Medical Association records show that the smallest baby born alive was Jacqueline Jean Benson of Chicago who weighed an estimated 12 ounces when she was born Jan. 14, 1936.

Funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. Hanson's daughter were conducted in the Sacquety Funeral Home Sunday with interment in Ullensvang Cemetery [Thor, Iowa].
