Rachel Barbara Hefty was born February 22, 1912, the daughter of Henry and Regula Elmer Hefty, near Renwick, Iowa. She graduated from the Vernon High School.

Rachel was united in marriage to James Arthur McGowan, of Goldfield, on December 12, 1939, at Lohrville, Iowa. The couple made their home on the McGowan farm northwest of Goldfield. In 1951, they moved to a farm near Renwick. James died in 1976. Rachel continued to live on the farm, and then with her children until 1987, when she entered the St. Luke Lutheran Nursing Home in Spencer.

She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Goldfield.

Rachel McGowan died April 15, 1989 at the Spencer Municipal Hospital at the age of 77 years, one month, and 23 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one brother. She is survived by one son, James and wife, Patricia, White Bear Lake, Minn.; one daughter, Mrs. Michael (Jannes) Palm, Spencer; three brothers, and five grandchildren.

Funeral services for Rachel Barbara McGowan were held April 18, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church in Goldfield. The Rev. Victor V. Victoria officiated and burial was in Glenwood Cemetery, Goldfield. The Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
