Obituary
Rosa Etta Lockhart, daughter of Arthur and Jane Sharp Lockhart, was born October 30, 1863, at Warsaw, Illinois. She was the fourth child in a family of nine children, seven boys and two girls. She passed away at the home of her son, George DeForest in Eagle Grove at 5:30 a. m., Thursday, October 25.

In the Fall of 1873 the Lockhart family moved from Warsaw to Wellington, Illinois, where the sister and three remaining brothers still reside. When the father, Arthur Lockhart, died in 1879, Rosa, with her older brothers and sister, had to assume many of the duties and responsibilities of the family. Her education included a normal school training after which she taught school in the vicinity of Wellington. On April 19, 1888, she married Frank DeForest. They lived at Cissna Park and Wellington, Illinois, until December 1895 when they moved to Iowa, locating on the Fobes farm south of Dows, where they have since resided. To union were born four children: Gertrude May, Mrs. Elwood Bauge, who passed away at Dows, December 21, 1942; Ruby, now Mrs. Harry W. Paine of Cincinnati; Frank Ray of Cincinnati and George Rockwell of Eagle Grove. Her husband, Frank, passed away September 18, 1940, and since that time she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Paine, in Cincinnati with occasional visits with her two sons and her relatives.

Mrs. DeForest joined the Presbyterian church at an early age and always retained her interest in its activities. Mrs. DeForest was an exemplary wife and mother, very devoted to her family and a staunch friend to her neighbors. Her constantly sunny disposition, warm friendliness and good common sense were noteworthy. Her many admirable qualities endeared her to all who met her and brought her a host of friends who will sadly miss her fine personality. She never lost her keen interest in people and in world affairs.

Mrs. DeForest leaves to mourn her passing her three children, Ruby DeForest Paine, Ray and George; one sister, Lillie Lockhart, and three brothers, Samuel, John and George Lockhart, all of Wellington, Illinois; five grandchildren, Sherwood, Jack and Frances Rae DeForest of Cincinnati, and Shirley and Robert DeForest of Eagle Grove, besides many relatives and a host of friends. All were present except Jack, who is in Japan.
