MARGARET MARIE SMITH
Margaret Marie Griffith was born June 24, 1917, in Wright County near Eagle Grove, the daughter of Ren and Sylvia Thurman Griffith. She received her education in a rural school, through the grades, and graduated from Goldfield High School in 1936. Margaret was united in marriage to Gerald Smith of Eagle Grove on November 26, 1936, at the Fort Dodge Congregational Church. They returned to Eagle Grove to make their home, and have resided here since that time. Gerald died in an automobile accident on August 29, 1970, near Eagle Grove. Her only child died in an automobile accident on February 16, 1983.

She was employed by Grahams Department Store for 17 years, retiring in 1975. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Eagle Grove.

Margaret Smith died at her home on December 19, 1989, after a long illness with cancer. At the time of her death, she had attained the age of 72 years, five months, and 25 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Janet; two brothers, Roger and Gerald; and two sisters, Ellen Steffenson and Velva MacMahon. She is survived by three grandsons, Rodney Ruiter, Germany; Randy Ruiter, Conrad; and Travis Bohy, Eagle Grove; a granddaughter, Ramona Hughes, Monticello; and her mother-in-law, Iva Smith, Eagle Grove.

Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church, Eagle Grove, on December 22 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David Miller officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Kastler-Babcock Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements.
