Gerald Everett Smith
15 January 1912 --- 29 August 1970

Gerald Everett Smith was born at Rockwell City on January 14, 1912, the son of Ralph and Iva Jones Smith. He attended school at Rockwell City, and then moved to the Eagle Grove area where he farmed until 1938.

On November 26, 1936, he was united in marriage to Margaret Griffith of Goldfield, in Ft. Dodge, at the Congregational Church. The couple returned to Eagle Grove to make their home.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith became the parents of a daughter, Janet, now Mrs. Leo McDermott of Clarion.

Mr. Smith was employed as a truckdriver for a number of years, and more recently with the Umthun Trucking Co. He had also worked in the local bakery for some time.

He died of injuries suffered in an automobile accident, on Friday night August 28, on Saturday August 29, at the age of 58 years, 7 months, and 15 days.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; his daughter, Janet; his mother, Mrs. Ralph Smith, Eagle Grove; four brothers, Earl Smith, West Bend; Dale Smith, Eagle Grove; John Smith, Bloomington, Ill., Donald Smith, U.S. Air Force in Florida. Also, two sisters, Bernice, Mrs. Norman Rossen, Portland, Ore.; and June, Mrs. Ervin Moss, Goldfield; and one grandchild. He was preceded in death by his father and three brothers, Floyd, Ralph Jr., and Kenneth.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Teamsters Union for a number of years.

Funeral services were held on Monday, August 30, at 3 p.m. in the 1st Baptist Church, Eagle Grove, with the Rev. Arthur W. Anderson officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Eagle Grove.
