Jesse William Hammond, Sr.
7 June 1897 --- 16 April 1969

Jesse William Hammond, Sr. was born June 7, 1897 in Saline County, Mo., the son of Seymour and Rebecca Radar Hammond. He attended school at Centralia, Ill., where the family had moved Missouri.

He was united in marriage to Alealia Fisher of Mt. Vernon, Ill. by Centralia on April 24, 1917, where they lived for 10 years before moving to Peoria, Ill., for 15 years. Mr. Hammond managed a Kroger Grocery store for 14 years while in Peoria.

Mr. and Mrs. Hammond came to Eagle Grove in 1942 where Jesse worked for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad as a Pipefitter and Sheet metal worker. Jesse also worked for Oldson Plumbing Heating for nine years prior to his retirement in 1964. He had a total of 28 years with Chicago Northwestern Railroad.

Mr. and Mrs. Hammond became the parents of five children, all of them survive. They are sons, Bobbie Hammond, Eagle Grove; Donald Hammond, Cedar Rapids; Jesse Hammond, Jr., Omaha; and daughters, Mary Jane (Mrs. Lyle Tilghman); and Miss Sharon Hammond, Marshalltown.

Mr. Hammond died at his home, Eagle Grove, on Wednesday, April 16, of an apparent heart attack at the age of 71 years, 10 months, and 9 days. He had not been ill, and his death was unexpected.

In addition to his children, he is survived by his wife, Alealia and (??) grandchildren, also 5 sisters, Mrs. Bertha Atchison, Miss Nora Hammond, Mrs. Sadie Atchison, Centralia, Ill., Mrs. Golda Revelle, Decatur, Ill., and Mrs. Lola May Mojonier, Flora, Ill.

Mr. Hammond was a member of the 1st Baptist church of Eagle Grove and was a Deacon for nine years. He was also a member of Golden Links Lodge No. 68 IOOF of Eagle Grove.

Mr. and Mrs. Hammond would have celebrated 52 years of married life on April 24th of this year.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 19th at the 1st Baptist Church in Eagle Grove with Rev. Arthur W. Anderson officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery at Eagle Grove. Odd Fellow services were held at 8 p.m. Friday at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home by members of the local IOOF Lodge.
