Verne Schaeffer
9 August 1892 --- 29 July 1968Funeral services for Verne Schaeffer, 75, were Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the First Congregational Church. Rev. Emmett Braselton officiated, and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Schaeffer, a lifelong resident of Eagle Grove, died suddenly Sunday night in an ambulance enroute to a Fort Dodge hospital following a heart attack.
Mr. and Mrs. Schaeffer had been at Osage for the day visiting Mrs. Schaeffer's relatives, and it was after they returned home, he became suddenly ill. He had not been in good health for some years but remained active and was around town daily and played golf most every day during the summer months.
He is survived by his wife and one sister, Mrs. Grace McVicker of Eagle Grove.
Born in Eagle Grove, Mr. Schaeffer attended local schools and also in Georgia where the family lived for a short time. When the family returned to Eagle Grove, he entered the U. S. Army as a musician during World War I. Following his discharge, he returned to Eagle Grove where he continued his occupation of musician until 1932 when he purchased the East Side Grocery. In 1944, he married Irene Gerbig at Osage. He retired from the grocery business in 1951 and until five years ago worked in local clothing stores and operated a Combo Dance Band.
