Russell Hale Blackman
12 December 1908 --- 18 November 1981

Russell Hale Blackman, the son of Warren O. and Almeda Wood Blackman, was born on December 12, 1908 at Eagle Grove, Iowa. He died at his home in Eagle Grove on Tuesday night, November 17, 1981
after suffering a heart attack. He attained the age of 72 years, 11 months and 5 days. He received his schooling in Eagle Grove. On December 31, 1933 he was united in marriage with Vera Bloomquist at Eagle Grove. For several years he operated a dry cleaners until it was destroyed by fire.

In Dec. of 1942, Russ entered the US Army and served in the European War Zone and received four Bronze Stars for major battles. He received his discharge on October 8, 1945. He returned to Eagle Grove, where he and his brother, Warren, owned and operated a dry cleaning business. Russell retired in 1971. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans, the Izaak Walton League, and the American Radio Relay League.

Russell really loved visiting with his friends, his radio and has enjoyed a life-time of fishing with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Vera of Eagle Grove; his son, and daughter-in-law, Dr. James Blackman and Mrs. Signe Blackman of Duluth, Minn.; five granddaughters, Jennifer, Kimberly, Gretchen, Rebecca and Bridget; his sister. Dr. Evelyn Blackman of Huntington Beach, California; two brothers, Warren Blackman of Des Moines and Bernard Blackman of Pine River, Minn., and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Everett and Jerold.

Funeral services for Russell H. Blackman, were held on Friday morning, November 20, 1981 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove. Rev. Don Callen officiated and burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove. Military Honors were conducted at the gravesite. Visitation was held at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home.
