Trooper Gabrielson dies in restaurant
A veteran state trooper who died after collapsing at a Des Moines restaurant suffered an apparent heart attack, the Polk County medical examiner said Tuesday. Sgt. Kent Gabrielson, 43, assistant district commander of the Iowa State Patrol unit headquartered at Cedar Falls, and formerly of Belmond, was stricken Monday evening while dining with a friend, the patrol said. He had been in Des Moines for training. Attempts by two troopers, a Des Moines police officer, another person at the restaurant and a fire department rescue crew failed to revive the officer, who was pronounced dead at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, authorities said. Dr. R.C. Wooters, the medical examiner, performed an autopsy Tuesday and said Gabrielson suffered an apparent heart attack. Gabrielson joined the patrol Oct. 1, 1969. He was assigned to District 11 in Cedar Rapids from 1969 until he was promoted to sergeant and transferred to District 9 in Cedar Falls on Jan. 29, 1982. He is survived by his wife, Greta; two daughters, Gretchen and Ingrid; his mother; one brother; and one sister. Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. Burial will be at Belmond, where Gabrielson was born.
