Michael Mortvet // Mikkel Olai Olson Mortvet
27 January 1881 ---- 18 October 1956

Mike Mortvet passed away at Clarion Community Hospital, Clarion, Iowa, Thursday, Oct. 18, 1956 after a lingering illness. He had been a resident of Eagle Grove since he came to America in 1901. At first, he was employed on the farm and in 1918 he was employed by the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad and retired in 1946.

Mr. Mortvet was a son of Ole and Guro Mortvet and was born at Skaanevik, Norway Jan. 27, 1881. He was baptized in infancy and during his childhood received instruction in the Christian Faith and was confirmed at Skaanevik Lutheran Church in 1895. In 1901 he came to America and made his home in Eagle Grove the rest of his life. Oct. 21, 1920 he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Lima.

Mr. Mortvet was a faithful member of Samuel Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was regular in church attendance as long as his health would permit.

He was a kind and considerate husband and father. He went about his work quietly and faithfully. He was loved and respected by his friends and neighbors.

He had the privilege to be brought up in a Christian home and his early life was deeply influenced by God fearing parents. Although he knew the way of salvation, he did not fully yield to Christ until this last summer when he experienced a spiritual awakening which resulted in coming to vest and assurance in Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord. He gladly witnessed about his Savior and what he had found in Him to the friends who called on him during his illness. The bereaved family have this comfort that he is now with his Savior.

Mr. Mortvet was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Gladys (Mrs. Willard Tokheim) Eagle Grove, Gertrude (Mrs. Robert L. Blackmore) Santa Clara, Calif, two grandchildren Donald Lee and Constance Ann Blackmore, one brother John in Norway and one sister, Mrs. M. L. Tendall, Roland.

Funeral services were held from Sacquety Funeral Chapel at 1:30 p.m. and Samuel Evangelical Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 1956. Pastor T. J. Severtson officiated. M. J. Luthro sang at the services. Interment was made at Rose Hill Cemetery.
