Mrs. Burton A. (Mattie) Thorpe, 88, died July 17 in a hospital at Margate, Florida. Services are today (Monday, July 21) at the Margate Methodist church which the Thorpe’s helped found when they retired to Florida 20 years ago.

Mr. Thorpe operated an iron works and cabinet shop in Algona where the Dr. Nash building is now located and for a time they farmed and had a hatchery south of Algona. Mrs. Thorpe was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ira G. Dewel, old-time Algona residents. She attended college in Des Moines. The Thorpes were married in Algona and observed their Golden Wedding some years ago at their daughter and son-in-law's home in Des Moines.

Mrs. Thorpe is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Byron (Jean) Lodwick, 4820 Grand Ave., Des Moines, and two grandsons, Byron, Jr., and Burton Lodwick. Also surviving are nephews D. E. Dewel, Algona; Dr. B. F. Dewel, Evanston, Ill.; Don P. Dewel, Dallas, Texas; and Dr. Robert C. Dewel, Baraboo, Wisc.

Ashes after cremation will be scattered over the ocean near Margate, as were those of her husband who died in 1977.

Mrs. Thorpe, while a resident of Algona, was active in the Methodist Church and Eastern Star, organized and was leader of a unit of the Campfire Girls which several years ago held a 50th reunion here.
