The Goldfield Chronicle

Mrs. Agnes Weir Whyte, 89, oldest resident of Goldfield, died at her home at Goldfield Monday morning.

Funeral services for her were conducted in the United Presbyterian church at Goldfield by her pastor, the Rev. Cassius G. McKnight, assisted by the Rev. J. Howard Machlan of the Methodist church, Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Craig Nelson and Mrs. Milton Nelson, accompanied by Mrs. Merle Harvey at the organ sang, "The Twenty-Third Psalm" and "Saved by Grace." Richard Henry, Conger Whyte, Robert Ottilie, John S. Whyte, Jr., Paul Wilson and Dr. John Erlander were pallbearers.

Mrs. Kenneth Axon, Mrs. Rudolph Schipull and Anina Hansen arranged the flowers. James Stevenson, Curtis Nelson and Duane Field were ushers. Interment was in Glenwood cemetery.

Mrs. Whyte, daughter of John and Jane Stevenson, was born in Tama county near Traer, Sept. 4, 1865 and died April 4, 1955 at the age of 89 years, seven months. She came to Goldfield with her parents in 1881. She and George Wilson Whyte were married Dec. 29, 1881. They established their home on a farm near Goldfield and moved to Goldfield where Mr. Whyte engaged in a retail business, in 1891. The firm continues as Whyte and son. Mr. Whyte died Nov. 11, 1930.

Mrs. Whyte continued to live at Goldfield until her death. Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Cunningham, her son-in-law and daughter, cared for her lovingly during her last 23 years.

She was a loyal, devoted member of the United Presbyterian church and had an alert interest in all that concerned it, week by week. She maintained a keen interest in all community affairs, including the school and even athletic events. Devoted as she was to her large family, she was very fortunate in having them living near her. She looked forward to her regular visits with members of her family. All of them were at her bedside during her closing hours. To her great satisfaction and theirs, her mind was alert and she was able to converse with them and bid them all a loving goodbye.

In addition to her parents and her husband she was preceded in death by two sons, Lawrence Parker and George H., and two daughters. Inez, who died at an early age, and Jennie Ottilie and two grandchildren, Robert McGowan and Gertrude Wood.

She is survived by two sons, John S. and Kenneth M. Whyte, five daughters, Mrs. Earl Anderson, Mrs. W. E. McGowan, Mrs. R. L. Cunningham and Mrs. Eliot Sevareid, all of Goldfield and Mrs. Gilbert Henry of Nevada, la., a sister, Mrs. Minnie Field, 22 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and many relatives and friends. Mrs. Whyte was exemplary in her disposition, patient never complaining and always concerned for others.

When her pastor called, she always desired him to read a portion of scripture and to offer prayer, a request which he appreciated hearing. One of her favorite passages was Psalm 13 "O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good; for His mercy endureth forever." Recently her pastor read Joshua 21:45, "There failed not aught of any good thing which the Lord had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass," for her. She believed that this well summed up God’s mercies to her. A "mother in Israel" has gone to her heavenly reward.
