Funeral services for James Leonard Smith were conducted at Eyler Funeral Home in Clarion Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Mr. Smith suffered a stroke a few weeks ago and was taken to Des Moines by ambulance last Tuesday and died Saturday night.
He was a veteran of World War I and the Goldfield American Legion was in charge of the services. His parents and two sisters preceded him in death. Nieces and nephews remain. Burial was in the Goldfield Cemetery with military rites by Goldfield Legion Post.

Page 10, Column 4James Leonard Smith, son of James and Janet [Jennette] Smith was born at Goldfield on Dec. 16, 1893. He died on January 5 at the Veteran’s Hospital in Des Moines. He had been in failing health for several years and in recent months suffered a series of strokes which led to his hospitalization and ultimate death. He was 70 years and 20 days old at the time of his death. The greatest part of his life was spent in the town of Goldfield.
He served with the U. S. Army Medical Corps during World War I and has since been a member of the American Legion Post of Goldfield. As an avid sportsman and a lover of the out of doors, he belonged to the Isaac Walton League for many years.
His mother and father, six brothers and sisters preceeded him in death. He leaves to mourn his passing, 2 aunts, 8 nieces, 1 nephew and other relatives and numerous friends.
The services were in charge of the American Legion Post of Goldfield and were held at the Eyler Funeral Chapel in Clarion. Military services were conducted at Glenwood cemetery in Goldfield.
Pallbearers were Marley Griffith, Otis Robinson, Fred Schnell, John Stevenson, Lee Jorgensen, D. Darland.
