Charles Eugene Manby, son of Eugene and Carrie Gaskill Manby, was born February 24, 1882, in West Liberty. He spent his early years in Holland, Rockwell City, Graettinger, and other Iowa Communities. He graduated from a telegraphers' school in Des Moines and was a life member of The Order of Railroad Telegraphers.
In January, 1901, he became station agent at Ward, South Dakota for the Burlington Railway. Later that year he started work for the Rock Island Railway at Holmes, Iowa. He continued working for more than 50 years for this same line and earned a life-time gold pass to be used for travel on any railroad.
On May 25, 1904, he married Harriett Eleanor Smith at Holmes. They started married life in Klemme. In January, 1906, they moved to Ocheyedan, where they spent the rest of their married life except six months' transfer to Clarion. To this union four children were born.
In 1906, Mr. Manby became a member of the Pilgrim Congregational church and served as its treasurer for 40 years.
During his 62 years of residency, he took an active part in community affairs. He served as mayor, councilman, and was city clerk for nearly 40 years.
He served as a school board member and was school treasurer for more than 25years. He assisted with bookkeeping and auditing for various business places and fraternal organizations.
Mr. Manby was a 50-year member of Silver Cord Lodge of AF and AM No. 525.
After the death of Mrs. Manby in 1960, he spent his remaining years with his children.
Mr. Manby died at the Worthington hospital on December 18, 1967, at 8:45 a.m., at the age of 85 years, nine months and 24 days. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and one brother, Harry Manby. He leaves to mourn his passing his four children: Orma (Mrs. T. J. Miller), Babbitt, Minn.; Merton, Los Angeles, California; Murnace (Mrs. F. C. Pickering); and Beth (Mrs. N. E. McCann), Cedar Falls; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two half sisters: Lura (Mrs. Hoy Clapsaddle), Conrad; and Aileen (Mrs. Cecil Yount), Cheyenne Wells, Colorado; two half brothers: Earl Ferguson of Ruthven, and Loren Ferguson of Cheyenne Wells, Colo.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held from the Congregational church, Thursday, December 21, with the Rev. Hugh Reed officiating. Masonic rites were by Silver Cord Lodge No 525.
Pallbearers were Ernst Wellhausen, Ray Rhodes, Ted Rusche, Kenneth Reinertson, Ferd Jarrott and Clarence Frohwein. Burial was in Ocheyedan Township Cemetery.
