John Coombs was born in Michigan on August 27, 1879 and died at his home north of Dows May 18 at the age of 65 years, 8 months and 21 days.
Early in life he moved to Iowa, where most of his life was spent in or around Eagle Grove, Rowan and Dows. On May 27, 1899 he married Clara Hartman at Galt. Four children blessed this home with their presence: William, who died at the age of nine months; Ralph; Blanch, now Mrs. Vern Dawson and Ina, now Mrs. Arthur Muhlenbruch. They bought and moved to their present farm home in 1918. In addition to farming, Mr. Coombs operated a threshing machine, corn sheller and silo filler. He was baptized in the Baptist church when he was a boy and he was a member of the Woodmen lodge for a number of years. Ten years ago he suffered a stroke and had been bed fast the past three years. He was a good neighbor, husband and father; generous hearted and always ready to help others in need. He was highly respected by all who knew him.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife; his son, Ralph; his two daughters, Mrs. Dawson and Mrs. Muhlenbruch and 11 grandchildren.
