Roland Clair “Roy” Allbaugh
16 December 1889 --- 28 February 1980

Roland 'Roy' Clair Allbaugh, 90, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 1980 at the home of his daughter in Ocala, Fla. where he had been spending the winter months.

Roy was born December 16, 1889 at Leon, Iowa, the son of William and Laura Gammon Allbaugh. Roy attended school in Leon and graduated from high school there in 1908. Following graduation, Roy enrolled at Drake University, Des Moines, for a few months until returning home to help work at his father's bus and dray business in Leon. In 1910, Roy entered Iowa State College, Ames, and attended there for two years. In 1912, Roy moved to Osage, Saskatchewan, Canada to help farm land that his father had acquired there. In the summer of 1914, Roy worked for a construction company in Osage and that fall, he helped several farmers around Osage with field work. In October of 1914 Roy moved to Lake City to work in the J.F. Baden general store. Roy became Mr. Baden's partner in 1915.

On February 21, 1917 Roy was married in Canada to Cornelia Esther Bergreen of Osage, Saskatchewan, Canada. This union was blessed with two children, Kenneth and Janet. The returned to Lake City in 1917 where Roy continued working for the general store. Roy entered the U.S. Army and served from September - December of 1918. In 1934, J.F. Baden and Co. opened their second store in Eagle Grove and Roy and his family moved there to manage it. In 1935, Roy became the sole owner and the store was known as Allbaugh's Dry Goods-Ready to Wear. Mr. Allbaugh operated the store for 27 years until retiring in 1961.

Mr. Allbaugh was a very community minded man and was very active in the towns he lived in. He was a member of the United Church of Christ, Eagle Grove; he served three terms on the school board in Lake City; he was a commander of Legion Post No. 38 in Lake City; and a Master of Zerubbabel Lodge No. 240 of the Masonic Order in Lake City. He served on the Eagle Grove school board, was an active member and past president of the Eagle Grove Chamber of Commerce, an active senior member and past president of the Rotary Club, he was one of the original 13 board members of the Rotary Ann Home Board and served as its board chairman for many years, and he served many years on the Jr. Fair Board and on the Memorial Building Board. Roy was also a member of Bower Lodge No. 464 of the Masonic Order, Eagle Grove; a member of OES Chapter 114; a member of Royal Arch Masons Chapter 123; belonged to the Eagle Grove American Legion; and was a 50 year member of the Masonic Order. He was also a director Emeritus of the Security Savings Bank, Eagle Grove.

Survivors of Mr. Allbaugh are his wife, Cornelia; a son, Kenneth, of Waterloo; a daughter, Janet (Dr. Keith) Knorr of Ocala, Fla.; a brother Leland of Knoxville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren - David, Ann and Laurie Allbaugh, Denise, Cheryl, Lisa and Rhonda Knorr; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his
parents, a sister, Carrie, and a brother, John.

Masonic services were held at 7:30 p.m. at Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home on Sunday, March 2. Funeral services were held Monday, March 3 at 2:30 p.m. at the United Church of Christ, Eagle Grove. Rev. Kenneth Reiter officiated and burial was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
