Hubert C. Hiemstra, 86, formerly of Clarion, died on Tuesday, November 24 at St. Marks Lutheran Home in Austin, Mn. He had suffered a stroke and had been a patient there the past two weeks. Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon at the Wright Christian Reformed Church of rural Kanawha. Rev. Robert Vermeer officiated and burial followed at the church cemetery. A service was also held in Austin on Friday morning. The Eyler-Willim Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Special music was by Senator and Mrs. Ray Taylor. Mrs. Elmer Christians was the organist. Honorary bearers were: Edward Rhodes, Gary Petersen, Thomas, Timothy and David Hiemstra, Rick and Robert Meinders, Carl Studer, Robert Mormann and Luvern Hanson. Casket bearers were: Michael Studer, Ardell and Dean Meinders, Dalton Cornwall and Dale and Tracy Hiemstra.

On October 7, 1901 he was born near Runnells and was the son of Sieste and Cornelia DenHartog Hiemstra. He received his education in the rural schools of Vandalia and moved with his family to the Williams area in 1920. He was married to Inez R. Crawford on November 29, 1922 at Webster City. They farmed near Meservey until 1940 when they purchased a farm north of Clarion where they lived for many years. He retired from farming in 1970 and in 1979 they moved to Clarion where she died in 1981. His second marriage was to Lucille Hanson on July 20, 1985 at Little Cedar Lutheran Church in Adams, Mn. They made their home in Austin.

Survivors include his wife, five children; Mrs. Clifford (Arlene) Coquelin, Hokah, Mn.; Mrs. Frank (Leona) Studer, Mrs. Adolph (Rose) Meinders and Herman, all of Clarion; and Carl of Reno, Nevada; a step-son, Luvern Hanson of Adams, Mn.; 21 grandchildren, 28 great- grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren and a sister, Ada Gates of Sun City, Ca. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, 4 sisters, 2 infant children, a daughter, Wanda Carlson, one grandchild and one great grandchild.

Mr. Hiemstra was a member of the Wright Christian Reformed Church and he had served on the social action committee. Other positions he had, included: the review committee of the Clarion and Dows Care Centers, Wright County REC Board, Wright County Conservation Committee, FHA Board, Past President of Federal Land Bank and the Chairman of the Farm Bureau Legislative Committee. For many years, he had been very active in the Republican Party.
