OBITUARY
Harm J. Pals
Meservey, Iowa
February 10, 1919

On Tuesday afternoon, at 3:00 o'clock occurred the death of Harm J. Pals, one of Pleasant Township's oldest residents.  The deceased was born on the 28th of April, 1833, in Ditzumer, Hamrich, Eastfriesland, Germany.  In 1856 he was united in marriage to Remke Menke.  This union was blessed with ten children of which number only four survive to mourn his departure of this life.  In 1889 the family emigrated to America settling down in the vicinity of Belmond.  After a residence of 17 years his faithful wife was taken from his side.  Finding the home broken up, he shortly afterwards took up his abode with his daughter, Mrs. Harm Meinders.  Here he found faithful attendance upon his wants and wishes till the time of his death.  Being unusually well, hale and healthy for one of so great an age, his custom was to spend a portion of each day out of doors, employed in whatever his hands found to do.  Up to only a few weeks before his death one might see him about the farm yard when the days were pleasant and inviting.  About a week ago Monday, a change in his physical condition became apparent.  His appetite which had always been keen failed and the open air saw him no more.  He failed rapidly but retained his presence of mind until a few hours before his death.

His departure is mourned but not as such without hope for he knew that his Redeemer livith and he should see Him face to face.  He is survived by his daughters, Mrs. Harm  Meinders of Meservey, Mrs. G. Barkema of Eastfriesland, Germany, and by his two sons, H. J. Pals of Meservey, and D. Pals of La Mourr, N. Dakota, and two brothers, Lambert Pals of Meservey, John Pals of Belmond and a host of other relatives.

Funeral services will be held on the afternoon of Thursday, February 13 beginning at one o'clock at the home.  A short service will be held at the home, following which, services will be continued in the Immanuel church.  Interment will be in the Immanuel cemetery.  The deceased attained the great old age of 85 years, 9 months, and 10 days.

A. H. Waalkes, Pastor
