FORMER GOLDFIELD MAN PASSES AWAY

Fred Belknap Dies At His Home In Ceylon, Minn. -- Buried Here

Fred Belknap, a former Goldfield resident, died at his home in Ceylon, Minn., last Thursday. His remains were brought here Saturday night and the funeral was held in the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 2:30. Interment was made at Glenwood cemetery.

OBITUARY

Frederick A. Belknap was born in the state of New York November 3rd, 1843. Died at Ceylon, Minn., March 15th, 1917, aged 73 years 4 months and 12 days. While he was a small child his parents moved to Illinois and soon afterwards to Argyle, Wis. His boyhood was spent here 'till he was sixteen, when he went to work in the logging camps on Black river. From here he enlisted as a private in Co. I, 2nd Wisconsin volunteers, in the spring of 1861 at the age of 17.

His regiment formed part of the Iron Brigade and he was in all its engagements from Bull Run to Gettysburg where he was taken prisoner and spent about six weeks, in "Libby" and Belle Island prisons.

After his return to the North he was in the hospital a long time and never was able for active service during his term of enlistment.

In the spring of 1869 he came to Goldfield, Iowa, driving a team thru from Wisconsin in February.

He was married in 1872 to Matilda Sill and they lived on a farm near Goldfield until 1903 when they removed to Ceylon, Minn., where they lived until his death.

Of a family of seven children four remain to mourn with their mother his loss. Clarence R. of Ames, Iowa, Cole E. and Mrs. D. G. Keith of Ceylon, Minn., and Mrs. B. W. Agard of Russell, Minn.

Mr. Belknap was converted in his own home in the summer of 1893. The immediate cause of his surrender to God was the death of his son, Merritt, who died a couple of months previous, passing away very suddenly. He united with the Methodist church in Goldfield, July 1, 1894. He was transferred from the Goldfield church, on his removal to Ceylon, Minn., and united with the Methodist church of that place. He remained a faithful and loyal member until his translation to the church triumphant last Thursday.
