Hibbard E. Wheeler
1 December 1854 ---- 26 August 1914

Unexpectedly was the announcement received by our citizens of Mr. Wheeler's death. While it was known he had been quite seriously ill for several weeks a fatal termination had not been anticipated by any. He had enjoyed without fatigue the visit over Sunday with friends from Kansas, and it was thought a little time would restore him to his usual health and vigor. But Wednesday forenoon he complained of weariness and about noon while reclining on his couch again spoke of exhaustion and in a moment passed away.

Hibbard E. Wheeler was born at Newbury, Vt., in 1854 and in his tenth year his parents moved to Wisconsin, near Berlin where he lived, until 19 years of age, when he went to Dubuque, Iowa, and entered the engine service of the I. C. Ry. with a run between Dubuque and Waterloo and, later became an engineer running between Waterloo and Sioux City.

On March 12, 1878, Mr. Wheeler was married to Miss Amelia P. Mahan at Clear Lake. After marriage they made their home at Fort Dodge but did not begin housekeeping until three years later, Mrs. Wheeler teaching school at Clear Lake.

After seven years of railroading Mr. Wheeler found he could not stand this and bought a farm near Austin, Minn., where they lived about five years then sold it and went to Mitchell, S. D., where he engaged in the real estate business for one year then came to Eagle Grove in 1894 and bought the stock of goods of Mrs. Shane in their present location. Mr. Wheeler was a member of the B. of L. E. being a charter member of the lodge at Fort Dodge, this was the only order with which he was ever affiliated. He was a lover of home, quiet and unpretentious, pleasant and friendly to all. He was the soul of honor and had the confidence of everybody as a businessman and citizen.

The funeral was held Friday afternoon at the Congregational church after a prayer service at the home, Rev. L. M. Pierce conducting the services. The interment was in Rose Hill cemetery. Among those present to attend the funeral were two sisters of Mrs. Wheeler, Mrs. W. E. Herrick of Edgar, Neb., and Mrs. E. E. Westcott of Corning.

Besides the bereaved wife, Mr. Wheeler leaves to mourn his death a brother in Sioux City and one in Lowell, Mass., and a sister in Grants Pass, Calif.

The warm sympathy of a large circle of friends goes to Mrs. Wheeler in her great affliction.

Card of Thanks.

I take this opportunity to thank my neighbors and friends for their sympathy and kindly help given me through the sickness and death of my husband.

Mrs. H. E. Wheeler.
