Genevieve Edna Nelson was born August 14, 1929 to Oscar and Carrie (Shaw) Nelson at their home in Belmond, Iowa. She was raised in Belmond and the surrounding area, attending several country schools before attending and graduating from the Belmond High School with the Class of 1947.
Genevieve met Ralph Turner while still attending high school, and they were married on June 3, 1947. The couple were blessed with three children: Larry, Randy and Kathy. The young family made their home in Dows, eventually moving to Belmond when Ralph began working for Genevieve’s father, Oscar, at Nelson Sand and Gravel. It was then that they built their home in 1952, that she lived the remainder of her years, until moving to the Assisted Living in Belmond in 2018. This home was just a block away from where she was born.
Genevieve was a stay-at-home mom until her children were older. She had several jobs, including USS Agrichemical, Thompson Seed Company, and the Belmond Hospital in the medical records department. She was also a Campfire Girls leader.
Genevieve and Ralph loved to travel, spending several winters in McAllen, Texas before buying a motor home and visiting numerous states and parts of Mexico. They also vacationed with family in Spain, Hong Kong and a Caribbean cruise.
Genevieve enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing cards – especially bridge, and various forms of crafting, everything from crochet, beaded card making to needlepoint. Genevieve was a proud Red Hat Member, enjoying many travels with them throughout Iowa.
