Hartley Crystal Friesleben

Hartley C. Friesleben, age 103 of Belmond and formerly of Clarion, passed away Monday, January 27, 2020 at the Belmond Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services for Hartley Friesleben will be held at 1:30 PM on Friday, January 31, 2020 at First Lutheran Church, 420 First Street Northwest in Clarion, with Pastor Grant Woodley officiating. Burial will be held at Belmond Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Hartley Crystal, son of William and Millie (Young) Friesleben, was born on September 14, 1916 in rural Franklin County. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school north of Alexander.

On February 14, 1940, Hartley was united in marriage to Wilma Haupt. Hartley and Wilma met at a dance in Belmond. The couple shared 73 years together.

Hartley was a lifelong farmer and worked at Belmond Bean Plant. In his younger farming years, Hartley milked cows by hand and had horses to plow. Hartley was very hard working and patient.

Hartley and Wilma loved to ballroom dance and spent many nights dancing at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. They enjoyed spending their winters together in Texas.

Hartley is survived by his sons Harvey (Darlene) Friesleben of Goldfield and Harley (Diane) Friesleben of Renwick; four grandchildren Todd (Lisa) Friesleben, Jeff (Alison) Friesleben, Michelle (Corey) Peters, and Melinda (Dale) McCaw; and seven great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife Wilma in 2014; parents; and sister LaVonne Mangels.
