Massena Native Dies in CA

Merritt E. Marlowe, 87, of Livermore, California passed away at a hospital there on Tuesday, January 28, 1992

The son of Herb E. and Mae (Porter) Marlowe, he was born in Massena on May 1, 1904 and after attending school here, went to work in his father's hardware store.

On September 20, 1932 he married Frances Shields, daughter of Charles L. and Minnie (Yarger) Shields of Massena.

Merritt bought the hardware store from his father in 1950 and sold it to Harold Dygert in 1957, purchased the Iowa Motel in Ames and operated it for five years, selling it later and purchasing one in Eagle Grove, Iowa. In 1967 he sold it and retired to Livermore, California where they have lived since that time.

The Marlowes had one son, Mickey O., born July 31, 1949. Mickey married Carolyn Holaday of Massena, who passed away in December 1983. They had three daughters, Julie, Lisa, and Susan. Mickey and his second wife, Mary Ellen Wakefield presently live in Fremont, California.

Preceding Merritt in death were his parents; two sisters, Velma and Delpha; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn (Holaday) Marlowe; and his father and mother-in-law, Charles and Minnie Shields. Surviving are his wife, Frances; son Mickey and wife, Mary Ellen; a sister, Verna, and husband of Kansas City, Kansas; a sister-in-law, Ethel VanMeter, who will be 100 soon and lives in Hinton, Iowa; three granddaughters and husbands, Julie and Bernard Brice of Salem, Oregon, Lisa and Alan Taylor of Woodland, California, Sue and Dave McCurry of Milpitas, California; six great-grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; and 2 step great-grandchildren.

Services were held in Livermore on Sunday, February 2.
