Rev. Alpheus Welby Tandy
28 December 1877 ---- 24 October 1952

Dr. Alpheus Welby Tandy was born Dec. 28, 1877, in Worth County, Mo., the child of Jackson Thompson and Martha Keys Tandy. He attended primary school in Worth County and the Old Academy at Albany, Mo. Later he attended William Jewell College, Liberty, Mo., Des Moines University, the University of Chicago, at which institution he received his Degree of Divinity about 1907.

Dr. Tandy began preaching while attending school, and was ordained before the turn of the century. From the University of Chicago, he accepted a call to the First Baptist church of Montevideo, Minn. While there he married Martha Anne Pritchett of Batesville, Ark., Dec. 23, 1908. To this union were born 3 children: Dorothy Beal, Hamburg; Marjorie Blakemore, Westwood, Calif., and A. W. Tandy, Jr., of Eagle Grove.

From the Montvideo pastorate, Dr. Tandy moved to Hamburg, where he served for about 7 years, thence to the First Baptist church of Mason City for 9 years. In 1925 he accepted a call to Fulton, Mo., until 1933. In 1934 he came to High Creek church, where he remained until 1948.

Mrs. Tandy died in 1946. Since that time he has supplied churches about the country: Mason City, Ottumwa, Cherokee, Corning, and others. He went to California a year ago and returned to Hamburg Sept. 26. His passing was sudden at Eagle Grove Oct 24, 1952.

Dr. Tandy was a chaplain in World War I. He served on the board of trustees of Des Moines University and of Hardin College. He was chaplain of the Iowa Odd Fellows home, Mason City, while pastor there, and was a Knight Templar of the Masonic Lodge.

Dr. Homer Huff, pastor of Emanuel Baptist church, Kansas City, Kans., delivered the funeral sermon at the High Creek church. Rev. Otha B. Holcomb, Hamburg, assisted. Dr. E. P. Quintpn, executive secretary of Iowa Baptist Convention, and Dr. Paul Smith, president of Iowa Baptist Convention, and Dr. Muncie of Central Seminary were in attendance at the funeral...
Burial was in the High Creek cemetery.
