Pioneer of Goldfield Vicinity Dies at Home After Lengthy Illness

GOLDFIELD—Mrs. Martha McCutcheon, 85, an early pioneer this vicinity, died at her home here Tuesday morning. Mrs. McCutcheon, a resident of Goldfield and vicinity for more than 60 years, had been in poor health the past several years and her condition had been critical in recent weeks.

She was a charter member the Goldfield United Presbyterian church, which was organized than half a century ago.

Her husband, William McCutcheon, preceded her in death a number of years ago. She is survived by two sons, John of Goldfield and William of Eagle Grove; seven daughters, Mrs. Frank Bjornson, Mrs. Arthur Bjornson and Mrs. Clifford Axon, all of Goldfield; Mrs. Penn Eckels of Britt; Mrs. Glenn Trotter and Mrs. Sam Umstead, both of Eagle Grove, and Mrs. Paul Pardun of Clarion.

She is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: L. P. Stevenson and Mrs. Agnes Whyte of Goldfield; Mrs. H. H. Gerdes Dayton, Ohio; Mrs. Frank Paine of Eagle Grove; Mrs. Frank Keister of Elmore, Minn., and Mrs. Minnie Field of Goldfield.

Funeral arrangements were incomplete Wednesday but will probably be held Friday.

McCutcheon Services Held in Goldfield

GOLDFIELD—Funeral services for Mrs. Martha McCutcheon, 85, who died at her home Tuesday were held at the residence Friday afternoon. The Rev. John Haupt, pastor of the United Presbyterian church, was in charge of the services, with burial in the family lot in Glenwood cemetery.

Mrs. Harry Mussman went to Elmore Thursday and accompanied her mother, Mrs. F. C. Kiester, to Goldfield where they attended the funeral of Mrs. Kiester’s sister, Mrs. William McCutcheon, Friday afternoon. Mrs. McCutcheon passed away last week Tuesday following a long illness.

Obituary

Mrs. Martha Stevenson McCutcheon, daughter of John and Jane Stevenson, was born at Peterboro [Peterborough], Ontario, Canada, July 27, 1857, and died at her home in Goldfield May 26, 1942.

At the age of eight years she, with her parents, moved to Traer in Tama county. In 1877 she was united in marriage to William McCutcheon. In 1882 they came to Goldfield and located on a farm in the Evergreen neighborhood. Here they made their home for thirty years and reared their family of ten children. All except one, Hugh, who died at the age of 18 years, are surviving to mourn her passing. In 1912 they left the farm and moved to Goldfield, where Mrs. Stevenson maintained her home until her passing.

She and her husband were instrumental in organizing the United Presbyterian church at Goldfield. She was faithful to the church and attended regularly as long as her health permitted. Her passing removes the last charter member of the local church.

She was very devoted to her family and was fortunate in having her children located in this vicinity. She looked forward to their visits and In her closing hours the names of her children were foremost in her mind. Although she has been in failing health for several years she maintained a keen interest in the church and community.

She leaves nine children, John McCutcheon, Mrs. Art Bjornson, Mrs. Frank Bjornson and Mrs. C. F. Axon of Goldfield, Mrs. Penn Eckles [Eckels] of Britt, Will McCutcheon, Mrs. Sam Umstead and Mrs. Glenn Trotter of Eagle Grove and Mrs. Paul Pardun of Clarion; also one brother, five sisters, twenty-eight grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.

Although she reached the advanced age of eighty-four years, her death will be a great sorrow to her family and all who knew her.

All of the; grandchildren were present at the funeral services except Private Paul Umstead of Camp Cloves, N. M.

Other out of town relatives who attended the funeral services were Mrs. Nettie Keister and Mrs. Charles Anderson of Elmore, Minn., Mrs. Elisabeth Paine, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Gill of Kingsley, Mrs. Harry Mussman of Lakota, Mr. and Mrs. John Young, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Dinsdale, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Early, Mrs. Albert McMillan and Arthur McCutcheon of Traer, Martha Dinsdale of Cedar Falls, James Dinsdale of Dinsdale, Andrew McCutcheon and Miss Edna McCutcheon of Des Moines, Mrs. Amanda Kennedy of Fonda and Mrs. Mysie Plumb of Minneapolis, Minn.

Funeral services were held at residence Friday afternoon with the Rev. John T. Haupt, pastor of the United Presbyterian church in charge of the service. Interment was in the family lot in the Glenwood cemetery at Goldfield. The casket was carried by grandsons of the deceased.
