Heart Attack Fatal To John S. Whyte, Senior

Funeral services will be at 2 o’clock this (Thursday) afternoon in the United Presbyterian church, for John S. Whyte, Sr. who died unexpectedly Monday evening at his home here in Goldfield.

The Rev. Curtiss Russell of Clarion will officiate and interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery.

Mr. Whyte, 77, a retired Goldfield merchant and banker, was born near Goldfield Dec. 19, 1884. He was survived by two daughters and two sons, Mrs. Forrest Bennett and Mrs. Joe Pojman both of Austin, Tex., Robert and John S. Whyte, Jr. both of Goldfield.

He is also survived by ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, four sisters and one brother, Mrs. Earl Anderson, Mrs. R. L. Cunningham and Mrs. Eliot [Elliot] Sevareid of Goldfield, Mrs. Gilbert Henry of Nevada, and Kenneth Whyte of Goldfield.

Obituary

John S. Whyte was born Dec. 19, 1894 [1884] in Goldfield, the son of George W. and Agnes Whyte. He died July 30 at the age of 77 years.

Mr. Whyte's entire life has been spent in this community, graduating from Goldfield high school in 1901, and after furthering his education in a Des Moines business school he returned to Goldfield where he entered the firm of Whyte and Son and has been active in the Company for 60 years.

April 12, 1909 John was united in marriage with Ruth MacEachron who died on Nov. 9, 1954. To this union were born four children, Robert and John Jr. of Goldfield, Harriet, (Mrs. Forrest Bennett) and Elizabeth (Mrs. Joseph Pojman) of Austin, Texas. Also surviving are ten grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one brother and four sisters.

During his vigorous career John S. Whyte, Sr. has always been at the forefront in community life, having served as president of the school board, of the Business Mens Club and an ardent and active member of the Presbyterian church. He assisted in organizing the Goldfield State Bank, serving as president and director. He received his 50 year Masonic membership award in 1957. John will be missed by his many relatives, business associates and friends.
