Clara Eva Howland Smith
4 May 1880 ---- 31 May 1964Mrs. Clara E. Smith, 84, a pioneer resident of Eagle Grove, died Sunday evening at 7 o'clock at the Taylor Nursing Home here. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, at 2'o'clock, at the Sandvig Funeral Home with the Rev. Lyle W. Lieder of the Methodist church officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.
Mrs. Smith is survived by one daughter Mrs. R. E. Blair of Springfield, Ill., two sons Marvin of Sibley and Bernard of Osage. Other survivors are ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, one brother Harold Howland of Portland, Ore., and one sister Mrs. J. C. Vandergon of San Jose, Calif.
Clara Eva Howland was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Howland, and was born May 4, 1880 in Belmond. In 1885 she with her family moved to Goldfield where she attended school for one year. The Howland family moved to Eagle Grove in 1886. She was graduated from Eagle Grove high school with the class of 1898, and following graduation she taught at the Head Grove school east of Eagle Grove two years.
She was married to Joseph Smith of Eagle Grove, March 27, 1901. The couple farmed northwest of Eagle Grove until 1905 when Mr. Smith entered the real estate business in Eagle Grove.
They were the parents of four children, Marvin of Sibley, Wyatt who died in 1943, Katherine (Mrs. R. E. Blair) of Springfield, Ill., and Bernard of Osage. She was a member of the Woodman Circle, a charter member of the Delphian Club, and the Christian Science church.
She was a resident of Eagle Grove for seventy-eight years with the exception of short periods of time she spent in LaCrosse, Wis. and Clarion.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one son Wyatt, her parents, two brothers and one sister, Miss Lela Howland, a long time teacher in the Eagle Grove schools.
