Joseph Craig Smith
24 July 1878 --- 21 May 1944

Joe C. Smith, 65, died Sunday evening at his home on South Commercial Ave. following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Wilson's Funeral Chapel with Mr. W. F. McDaniels, First Reader of the Christian Science Church, Fort Dodge, in charge. Burial was made in Rose Hill cemetery.

Mr. Smith was a resident of Eagle Grove for 39 years. He was in business here for twenty years, and has also traveled in thirty counties of North Central Iowa, selling cash registers and store fixtures. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge and the Woodman of the World, being an officer of the latter organization.

Joe Smith was well known in Eagle Grove, and Iowa, and because of his genial nature made many friends.

He is survived by his wife and three children, Marvin Smith of Halls, S. Dak., Mrs. R. E. Blair of Joliet, Ill., Pfc. Bernard C. Smith of Lincoln, Neb. Army Air Field. Also two sisters, Mrs. E. J. McGrath of this city, Mrs. C. M. Ward of Humboldt and three brothers, Guy R. Smith of Clarion, Edgar G. Smith of Edinburg, Ill., and Ted R. of Parsons, Kansas. Also four grandchildren.

Mr. Smith was born July 24th, 1878, to John C. and Louisa Jane Hartsock Smith, on a farm in Christian County, Ill. In the spring of 1895 he moved with his parents to a farm two miles north of Woolstock. In 1900 he started farming for himself on a farm northeast of Eagle Grove, and on March 27, 1901 he was united in marriage with Clara Howland of this city. They resided on the farm until 1905, when they moved to Eagle Grove and Mr. Smith became engaged in the real estate business, and also was an auctioneer. Since that time he has continued his business in this city.

Out of town relatives present for the funeral rites were Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Smith and family of Halls, S. Dak., Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Blair and Joan of Joliet, Ill.; Pfc. Bernard Smith of Lincoln, Neb.; Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Smith of Edinburg, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Ward of Humboldt, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Smith; Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Smith of Clarion; Mr. and Mrs. John Smith of Woolstock; and Don Ritchie of Minneapolis, Minn.
