Mrs. Eli Axon Funeral Monday

Mrs. Ell Axon died at her home here Friday after a prolonged illness. She is survived by her son, Clifford Axon and several sisters. Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon with the Rev. Bassett conducting the service with burial in Glenwood cemetery.

Obituary

Mary Louise Philp was born Jan. 31, 1865, in Coburg [Cobourg], Can. At the age of six weeks her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Philp, removed with the other members of the family to Tama, county, Iowa, where they resided for a period of 20 years.

On March 26, 1889, she was married to Eli Axon of Goldfield. They lived on a farm near Goldfield where they pioneered with other early residents until 1893, when they moved into Goldfield. In this home both lived until death called them home.

To this union was born one child, Clifford, who, with his wife, two grandsons, two sisters and other relatives survived. In addition there is a host of friends and neighbors.

In September, 1937, Mrs. Axon suffered a stroke which resulted in her recent failing health. On Friday evening, March 11, 1938, at 6:45, she passed away to her eternal home, being 73 years, 1 month and 10 days of age.

Mrs. Axon was interested in civic associations, being a charter member of the Bayview Club; also a very active member of the Old Settlers Association.

As a close associate of the deceased in her period of failing health there were many interesting tales told of the pioneer days of life on the farm. Many older friends experienced some of these same incidents.

Mrs. Axon will be much missed by her grandsons who with the son and wife were the objects of her great interest and devotion. The lives and interests of the four were very close during the latter years of her life.

Her many years of residence in this city makes her a well-known personality and a large number of friends will miss her cheery disposition and appearance among them. During the last days of her illness she suffered intensely and her quick passing was a shock to all who knew her well.

Relatives from out of town who attended the service were Mr. and Mrs. Percy Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Wilson, Mrs. H. T. Wilson, Mrs. Roy Bonner and Mrs. Mabel Bonner of Jewell, Mrs. Will Snyder and daughter of Nevada, Mrs. Jessie Philps [Philp] of Ayershire, Mrs. Henry Drier and Mrs. Minnie Rubel of Laurens, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Tallman of Des Moines, Mrs. Lucille Hansen of Stanhope, Donald Philps [Philp] of Waterloo, Mr. and Mrs. Penn Eckles of Britt, Mrs. Marvin Griemann of Garner, Misses Beulah and Nina Wetzel and Bert Axon of Traer.
