Marvin “Bud” Morris Hamer, the son of Morris Pryce and Lea Fanny (Loux) Hamer, was born on September 30, 1925, on a farm southeast of Eagle Grove, Iowa. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth, graduating from Eagle Grove High School in 1943. After graduation he helped his dad farm, his plan was to enlist in the Army, but his father became ill, so he took over the family farm. In 1945, Uncle Sam drafted him into the United States Army and he was stationed in Falda, Italy, running the POWS on the airbase. After returning from the service in 1947, he went back to farming until 1990 – 62 years living on the farm. His favorite part of farm operation was feeding cattle.

On February 8, 1948, Bud was united in marriage with Genevieve Elida Johnson at Samuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove. After 67 years of marriage, Gen preceded him in death on March 25, 2015.

Bud was an active member of Samuel Lutheran Church – serving the church in many capacities and was a member of the Eagle Grove V.F.W. He served as a 4-H leader, softball coach, on the Extension Council – A.S.C.S. – certifying fields and was the director of the Eagle Co-Op. Bud enjoyed woodworking, fishing and golfing – still playing a few times a week this past summer.

Bud passed away on Saturday, November 30, 2019, surrounded by his family, at Rotary Senior Living in Eagle Grove, at the age of 94 years. He was also preceded in death by his parents; brother, Howard Hamer; sisters, Doris Kubly and Norma Johnson; brothers-in-law, George Murphy, Floyd Kubly , Arvid Bauman and Chuck Johnson and sister-in-law, Marcedes Hamer.

Survivors include his two children, Rod Hamer and wife Diane of Cedar Falls and Deb Dutler and husband Don of Winthrop; four grandchildren: Dee Lange (Todd), Dan Dutler (Stephanie), Kari Read (Jason) and John Hamer (Ashley); six great-granddaughters, Brenna and Kelsey Lange, Avery and Saddie Dutler and Zoe and Heidi Read; one great-grandson, Edwin Hamer; sisters, Phyllis Bauman of Eagle Grove and Margaret Murphy of Auburn, AL; brother-in-law, Richard Johnson of New Port Richey, FL; sister-in-law, Marilyn Johnson of Eagle Grove and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, December 6, 2019, 10:30 a.m. at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove with Pastor Richard Taylor officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Foust Funeral Home, Eagle Grove. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.

Memorials may be left to Unity Point Hospice, Brushy Creek Honor Flight, American Red Cross or the American Cancer Society.
