Erik Olaus Ryan was born January 6, 1883 at Gardner, Illinois to Knudt and Oline Eide Ryan. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. He died at his home in Eagle Grove, Iowa on July 11, 1967 after reaching the age of 84 years, 6 months and 5 days.
Mr. Ryan moved with his parents to Slater, Iowa, at the age of 18 and came to Eagle Grove in 1908. On July 19, 1917 he was married to Elma Swanson at Eagle Grove. He was a barber, retiring in 1951 to care for his wife during her illness. He was also an avid baseball fan and enjoyed raising pigeons and won many trophies with the pigeons he exhibited.
His wife preceded him in death in 1952 and also his parents and 2 brothers. Those who mourn his departure are his children, Thomas Ryan of Boulder, Colorado; Robert Ryan of Eagle Grove; and Jeanette, Mrs. Kenneth Underberg, Livermore; one brother, Ole Ryan of Slater, two sisters, Mrs. Annie Berhow, and Mrs. Nellie Elliot, both of Huxley; and by 9 grandchildren.
He was a long time member of Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he had served several terms as trustee.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 13, at 2:00 p.m. at Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pastor W. E. Carlson officiating. Interment in Rose Hill Cemetery.
