Grandson of E.G. resident found dead in Arizona mountains

The grandson of an Eagle Grove resident, Ruth Driessen, has been found dead after being missing for close to two months.

Steven Dwayne Rifen, 27, of Phoenix, Ariz., was found dead from exposure in a rugged mountain area of Tonto National Forest, northeast of Phoenix, after becoming stranded on a washed out road Dec. 17. His body was found by a rancher on horseback, Feb. 2. Rifen was a 1972 graduate of Roland-Story High School in Story City. He lived in Ames and Story City most of his life, until moving to Phoenix two years ago. He was employed at Tip-Top Nursery in Phoenix.

He is survived by his parents, Dwayne and LaVonna (Bonny); two brothers, Doug, Phoenix; and Mike, Mankato, Minn.; and a sister, Kathy Marietta, Phoenix. Other local survivors include: great-aunts, Myrtle Jensen, Iva Clabaugh, Maxine Espeland, Jeannette Nervig, all of Eagle Grove; aunts, Barbara Schaumburg, Clarion; Carolyn Cartwright, Dakota City; uncles, Bernie Bell, Bode; Don Bell, Thor; Laverne Bell, Woolstock; and several cousins. After cremation, his remains were scattered over the mountains.
