Ida Arends Ziegler
December 12, 1867 ---- March 3, 1943

Mrs. W. A. Ziegler Buried Here Sunday

Mrs. W. A. Ziegler died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Eugene Hinton, West Orange, N. J., Thursday. Mrs. Zeigler had pneumonia several weeks ago and had been ill for ten weeks. The body was brought here for burial and funeral services were held at the Methodist church on Sunday afternoon with the Rev. Joy Smith in charge of the services. Burial was in the Glenwood cemetery.

She is survived by three children, William Ziegler, Washington, D. C.; Gladys Ziegler, Ridgefield Park, N. J., and Mrs. Eugene Hinton, East Orange, N. J., all of whom were present for the service. Mr. Ziegler died several years ago.

Ida Arends was born in Freeport, Illinois, December 12, 1867. At the age of ten she moved with her parents to Grundy county, Iowa. In 1888 she was married to William Albert Ziegler. To this union were born four children: William, Jeannette, who died in infancy; Gladys and Rozella. After spending two years in Rock Rapids, Mr. and Mrs. Ziegler moved to Goldfield, Iowa, where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Since the death of her husband in 1930, Mrs. Ziegler has spent the winters with her children in the East. She returned to her home each spring to take care of her flowers and to be with her life-long friends. Few women have been so strong and healthy as Mrs. Ziegler, and throughout her life she has been active in service to her family, her church and her community. Her first and only serious illness began on Christmas morning, when she was taken sick with pneumonia while living with her daughter in West Orange, New Jersey. For ten weeks she remained in bed, gaining strength gradually and looking forward to the time when she could return to her out-of-door life and her friends in Goldfield. Without warning, however, her heart failed and she passed away suddenly on the evening of March 3.

She leaves to mourn their loss her three children, William A. Ziegler, Washington, D.C.; Miss Gladys Ziegler, Ridgefield Park, N. J., and Mrs. Eugene M. Hinton, West Orange, New Jersey, and a brother, A. J. Arends, Hampton, Iowa.

Out-of-town relatives attending the funeral were: Mrs. Donald Lackey, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. William Elling and Mrs. Lillian Cronin, Hampton, Iowa, and Mrs. Emma Koningsberg of Des Moines.

Friends of Mrs. Ziegler will remember her for her remarkable energy and her life of service to others. Her hands were never idle, and her mind was alert to anticipate need and to supply help and comfort. Her family will remember her especially for her devotion to them and her intense interest in their education, for her spirit of eternal youth, for her unfailingly cheerful disposition. Wherever she went she made a host of friends, for she loved people of all ages and was able to speak the language of the rich and the poor, the young and the old. Her passing marks the loss of another outstanding pioneer of Goldfield.
