Rites Held for Pianist Lee M. Pattison, 76

Private funeral services were held Saturday in Claremont for Lee M. Pattison, 76, noted pianist-composer and longtime professor at Scripps College, who died Thursday after a long illness.

Mr. Pattison, who retired from Scripps in 1962 after 21 years as music professor, leaves his wife Gladys of 786 W. 11th St., Claremont, and two daughters, Mrs. Valerie Hook of Claremont and Mrs. Howard A. Cook of Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.

After his debut as a piano soloist in Boston in 1913, Mr. Pattison performed in concerts in Europe, the United States and Australia, both as a soloist and as a duo-pianist with Guy Maier, a musical partnership that endured more than 15 years.

In the 1930s he served on the faculties of Sarah Lawrence College and Columbia University.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt appointed him regional director of the Federal Music Project of the Works Project Administration in 1935.

In addition, Mr. Pattison was general director of the American Lyric Theater and served as director of the Metropolitan Opera for the spring season of 1936-37.

Throughout his career as performer and instructor, he published important compositions for piano, for two pianos and for voice and choral groups. In the 1940s he was a familiar recitalist in Southern California.

Mr. Pattison was a Phi Beta Kappa and a member of numerous music societies. He was a fellow of the International Assn. of Arts and Letters and co-founder of the Valley Chamber Music Society. A music hall on the Scripps campus was named in his honor.

Lee Pattison, pianist, dies after illness

Lee M. Pattison, nationally known concert pianist, composer and teacher, died in Claremont last Thursday after an extended illness. He leaves his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Valerie Hook of Claremont and Mrs. Howard A. Cook of Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. Private funeral services were conducted.

In later years, Mr. Pattison was professor of music at Scripps College, from 1941 until his retirement in 1962 when he was designated Professor Emeritus. The new music building on campus was named the Lee Pattison Recital Hall. He also extended his teaching to students of Claremont Graduate School and appeared frequently as solo pianist and in chamber music concerts.

In partnership with the late Guy Maier, he became noted throughout the world as the duo-pianists concertized in Europe, the British Isles, Australia and the United States. Pioneers in their field, the pianists remained together for 15 years.

From former Eagle Grove residents, now living in California, we have received clippings from a Los Angeles, newspaper telling of the death of Lee M. Pattison, 76, formerly of Eagle Grove.

Mr. Pattison lived here as a young boy and was a member of the class of 1907 of Eagle Grove High School. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Pattison and the family lived on North Lincoln Ave. Mr. Pattison was employed by the Chicago and North Western R. R.

Lee Pattison gave piano lessons at the family home and many Eagle Grove people boast they “Took” piano lessons from the noted pianist composer, Lee Pattison.

He made his debut as a piano soloist in Boston in 1913 and gave concerts in Europe, Australia and the United States both as a soloist and as a duo-pianist with Guy Maier, who was his musical partner for 15 years. They gave a concert here one time in the Princess Theater.

Mr. Pattison was a long time professor at Scripps College in Claremont, Calif., and retired in 1962.

He was also a director of the American Lyric Theatre and served as director of the Metropolitan Opera for the spring season of 1936-1937.

Mr. Pattison died Dec. 22nd and private funeral services were held Dec. 24 in Claremont, Calif. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
