In 1863 Mr. McVicker enlisted in the army of the Civil war and was with Sherman in his famous "March to the Sea”. He was honorably discharged at Washington June 5th, 1865 two months after the assassination of President Lincoln. Mr. McVicker still owned the 339 acre farm on the Boone which he bought in 1883 at $25.60 per acre with improvements practically as they are now. Mr. McVicker’s life was characterized by industry, temperance and righteousness, having a rich heritage of life’s highest rewards in this world's goods and in happy, prosperous children.
